It is recommended that you travel first class on the train. On the first day the journey passes through the Selous game reserve and this entire journey offers spectacular opportunities to see Africa away from the main roads. In fact the journey passes through territory almost inaccessible by any other other means that by railway. It negotiates tunnels of the Udzunga Mountains, then passes the domed volcanic cone of Mount Mbeya before passing the country midway between the lakes Tanganyika and Malawi.
To book in advance is necessary, especially at holiday times.
Children under 7 travel free, under 15 pay half fare. The sleepers are single sex, so men and women will be in separate compartments unless your party books the complete compartment. |
The service is reported to be very good and sightings of elephants, monkeys, gibbons, zebra, giraffes and antelope are common. With 6 beds per cabin it is not always easy to sleep. It offers a good chance to meet local people.
Times are approximate and it is better to leave your watch behind and enjoy the journey. |
